Hardware Sales
Ty McClellan, one of the owners of the locally family owned business, Hardware Sales, lived next to Michelle for years. As she got older and closer to graduating high school, she began to plan for entering the work world. After Michelle gained some valuable volunteer experience, Michelle’s mother asked Ty to connect her with the Human Resource department of Hardware Sales.
The HR department then allowed CVS in to do some task analysis to identify essential functions of a job that might fit Michelle’s talents. She was soon hired to work 5 days a week 2 hours per day in the paint department. She worked with a job coach supporting her to learn each steps of her new job. Michelle became increasingly independent at work, to the point that the job coach would only check in once or twice a week.
Just when everything was going so well, changes started happening. The bus routes changed and Michelle was transferred from the paint to the lighting department. Hardware Sales staff notified Michelle’s job coach of the changes and difficulties Michelle would soon face. With help from Hardware Sales and her job coach, Michelle found a new support person in the lighting department. Cascade spent more time with Michelle until she was comfortable in her new roles.
Now, years after she joined the team at Hardware Sales, owner Jerry McClellan says, “It is fun to watch her progress and get more and more comfortable. She is like a part of the Hardware Sales family.” Working at Hardware Sales has taught Michelle confidence, independence and the value of teamwork. She now also volunteers for Habitat for Humanity, Maryann’s House and has joined the Cascade Board of Directors.
